Meet Dr. Brewton

SBMD Healthcare is led by Dr. Sha’llah Brewton, whose clinical work is shaped by a deep commitment to reproductive justice, community-centered care, and patient advocacy. Dr. Brewton’s approach blends evidence-based medicine with cultural humility, historical awareness, and an unwavering respect for patient autonomy.

Her work is informed not only by clinical training, but by listening to communities, honoring stories, and understanding how medicine intersects with race, gender, power, and trust.

Dr. Brewton is a bilingual (English-Spanish), board-certified, Family Medicine physician dedicated to reproductive and gynecologic healthcare across the life course.

Her medical training in Cuba emphasized prevention and community-centered care. During her residency training in Harlem and the South Bronx, she witnessed firsthand how structural inequities influence health outcomes, shaping her commitment to equitable, culturally responsive medicine.

Her care focuses on listening deeply, partnering with patients, and creating care plans that reflect individual goals and lived experience.

About SBMD Healthcare

Care that remembers. Medicine that restores.

SBMD Healthcare was created to offer something both old and urgently new: medical care rooted in listening, history, and relationship. We provide thoughtful, trauma-informed gynecologic and reproductive healthcare through home visits and virtual care, meeting patients where they are physically, emotionally, and socially.

Our work is grounded in the belief that health is not transactional. It is relational. It is shaped by lived experience, cultural memory, and the systems that have failed people for generations. SBMD Healthcare exists to practice medicine differently, with intention, accountability, and deep respect for the people we serve.

The Meaning Behind Our Symbol

The SBMD Healthcare logo blends two powerful symbols: the Phoenix and Sankofa, represented in its stylized heart form.

Sankofa, an ancient Adinkra symbol, means “go back and get it.” It reminds us that the past must be acknowledged and understood in order to move forward wisely. For SBMD healthcare, this means learning from historical harm, honoring patient stories, and refusing to repeat  practices that cause trauma. It also means honoring time honored traditions and holding space for cultural ways of healing that people bring with them from various parts of the world.

The Phoenix, a symbol with origins in ancient Egypt, represents rebirth through fire. It reflects resilience, transformation, and the possibility of renewal.

Together, these symbols reflect how we practice care at SBMD Healthcare: we look honestly at the history of medicine, honor lived experience, and work to build a more humane and just standard for how care is delivered.

From this foundation, we walk alongside you, creating space to reflect on where you have been and to make thoughtful decisions about what comes next — supporting you in reaching and sustaining your health goals with dignity and agency.

Our Philosophy

Modern healthcare often asks patients to fragment themselves. Appointments are rushed. Context is lost. Histories are minimized. At SBMD Healthcare, we move in the opposite direction.

We practice reformative healthcare, care that:

  • Honors personal and collective history

  • Centers reproductive justice and bodily autonomy

  • Acknowledges medical trauma without requiring patients to justify it

  • Builds care plans with patients, not for them

We recognize the very real historical and ongoing harms committed against people of color, women, and marginalized communities in the name of medicine and science. Those truths shape how we practice. We slow down. We explain. We invite questions. We listen deeply. And we treat trust as something to be earned, not assumed.

How We Practice

SBMD Healthcare operates as a direct care practice, meaning we do not accept insurance. This allows us to:

  • Spend unhurried time with patients

  • Offer transparent pricing

  • Reduce administrative barriers

  • Provide care that is clinically sound and emotionally safe

Our services include home-based and virtual care for gynecologic needs, perimenopause and menopause, reproductive life planning, abortion and pregnancy options care, urgent women’s health concerns, and postpartum “Baby & Me” care that supports both birthing-parent and newborn.

By removing insurance constraints, we protect the integrity of the patient-provider relationship and create space for meaningful, personalized care.

Our Commitment

At SBMD Healthcare, we are committed to:

  • Practicing medicine that is ethical, accessible, and accountable

  • Creating care environments where patients feel safe, believed, and respected

  • Partnering with patients as experts in their own lives

  • Building a future of healthcare that does not forget where it came from

This is care that remembers. This is care that rebuilds.

This is SBMD Healthcare.
